So amazingly, there are still some people out there who are thinking of starting a YouTube channel and have been for months, possibly even years. My advice to you is, ready or not, start now. And I'm not telling you this as a New Year's resolution. Every moment you hesitate or procrastinate, there are thousands of video creators starting their YouTube channel today, and gobbling up all your potential audience. You don't want that.

Feel the fear, do it anyway. Start, press record. Record whatever you want today. It doesn't matter if it doesn't end up on YouTube. You need to gain experience in getting in front of the camera, getting behind the camera, using your editing program. You need to start creating content to find out whether or not you enjoy making videos before you know whether or not you enjoy being a YouTuber.

Tip #2 Learn How YouTube Works, No Seriously:

The chances are, that the first video you make is going to absolutely suck. Fantastic, you've made a video. You've made the first step, and in six months’ time, you'll look back at that first video and think yeah, that really was terrible, but you've gotta start the journey somewhere. And with that, you've gotta start your YouTube channel somewhere as well, even if you're not ready. Create a YouTube account, upload a video to YouTube. You don't have to publish it, that's the important thing.

You need to gain experience going through the workflow of uploading videos. The last thing you want is having a brilliant video ready to upload, but you don't know how the YouTube system works. Again, experience is going to trump any advice any of us can give you, so record a video, upload it to YouTube. You don't have to publish it.

Tip #3 Develop a Strategy you Will Actually Follow:

While getting some practical experience behind you is obviously a good thing, you also want some form of strategy. So, answer these questions:

What do you want your channel to achieve on YouTube

, and when you're answering this, try and answer it from a viewer's perspective, not your perspective. So I don't want to hear about hitting 10,000 subscribers, a million views, or whatever. If your viewers know that you're in it for your own self-gain, they will see through it and immediately switch off. Viewers want to know what they can gain from the content, and you want to sell that as much as possible in your videos.

 Again, try and be as specific as possible. What age range? What gender, if you are going to a particular gender? What type of demographic? What are they interested in? You need to know who's going to watch your content.

 There are millions of gaming channels out there, hundreds of thousands of Fortnite channels out there. How are you going to distinguish your content from everybody else who's already on YouTube making content? You need to disrupt the status quo, not join it, because you'll never be seen.

how are you going to deliver this content?

 Is it going to be every day, once a week, at a particular time of the day? Think about when your audience is most likely to watch YouTube, and how much YouTube they can watch per week, and then tailor your content to those watching habits, and think about whether you're going to do video on demand, live streams, what's going to be best for you and your audience?

Tip #4 Find Your Niche and Build the Hell Out of It:

live streams, you'll know this one off by heart. Niche down. Let me give you a quick example. What's your channel about? If you're giving an answer such as, "My channel's about beauty, and it's about travel, "and it's about vlogging," then it's about too many things. 

. It should be about one specific topic, when you start your channel, because you need to appeal to a very specific audience.

Once you've grown your channel, and you've got millions of subscribers who fall in love with you, you can take them on a journey wherever you want, but to begin with, the audience is only interested in the content. They have no investment in you. Try and remember that. It's a cruel lesson to understand, but it will help you when you first start out on YouTube.

Once you've thought about and answered all of these questions, I want you to wrap it all up in a nice little present, called your value proposition. This is your elevator pitch. Try and tell your audience who you are, and why they should watch you, in around about six words.

. It tells you the who, YouTubers, video creators, and why they should watch, because they will learn how to grow their channels. But we've managed to do that in four words. Now it's your turn.

Tip #6 Invest in the Right Audio Equipment:

If you've just started out on YouTube, and you're wondering what your first tech upgrade should be, it is 100% audio, and here's why. Bad audio is so much more distracting than bad video, and everybody hates onboard microphones. 

So if you can, get yourself a dedicated microphone for your camera,

 and if you're recording from a computer, you can't go far wrong with a Blue Yeti.

Tip #7 Create a Formula with Template Videos:

Videos need structure, so when you make your next video, try to think of how you will develop a show formula, that you can use as a template for your future videos. Remember at the beginning of this video, I literally gave you a hook. An introduction, a teaser to what's going to be going on for the rest of this video. Then we have the branded intro, followed by an introduction to who we are for new viewers, a call to action to subscribe to our channel, and then we jumped into the meat of the content where we are right now, and at the end of this video, you'll see how we round this all up.

Your show formula will take time to structure, and it will evolve over the course of your YouTube journey. Try and keep an eye out for this when you watch your favorite YouTubers. As rough and as random as they might appear, there is always structure and story behind each video, and that's why you watch them.

Some people love analytics, others hate them, but there are a couple that are crucial to keep an eye on, whether or not you want to look at that analytics. The first is 

This represents how enticing your titles are, and how clickable your thumbnails are. Check the click-through rate for your channel as a whole, and on individual videos as you test. I'm not going to give you all of the same target to reach. Check what your current click-through rate is, and whether it's two, four, six, or eight percent. I want you to try and improve that by two to three percent this year. It will bring in so many more views.

The other metric, as it always has been, is 

. Generally speaking, the more watch time you get, the more YouTube is going to promote your content. But if you make shorter videos, that doesn't necessarily mean you must make longer videos, because your audience might not react very well to those longer videos.

What I will say is maximize the value of your watch time in the videos that you have. That's by looking at relative audience retention. How does your video stack up to similar videos, in terms of whether people are still watching or not, and try and improve the relative audience retention. Having said that, if your average view duration is 60, 70, 80%, you're doing really well, and it gives you a license to try testing longer videos.

Verify your YouTube account. That will give you access to the most important tool on YouTube, which is custom thumbnails. We've got a video here on how to do it.

Tip #10 Create an Engaging, Interesting Channel Banner:

If I see another generic cityscape, or rolling hills in the channel banner when we do channel audits, I'm going to rip out my hair.

How to Start a YouTube Channel: 10 Brilliant Tips

When you’re building a YouTube audience, getting your viewers to engage with you can be tough. Across the board, most of them just want to watch your videos, get their entertainment fix, and close the app.

, let’s talk about how amazing it is and why you’d want to activate it on your channel.

Super Chats are a fun way to monetize your YouTube Channel and connect with your audience. When you host a live stream or schedule a video premiere, viewers in the live chat can reward you with monetary donations ranging from $1 to $500.

To make sure everyone can see them, Super Chats are highlighted and pinned to the top of the video’s live chat. They also display the contributor’s name plus the amount of money they donated.

When it comes to building a community on YouTube, this recognition system is why Super Chats are so valuable for creators. They gamify the live chat section, allowing you to flaunt your biggest fans as they compete for your attention.

Need an example of how Super Chats boost engagement? It all starts with the pinned comment.

The more money a Super Chat contains, the longer the donator’s comment is pinned in live chat. So for example, if someone were to donate $500, their Super Chat would be visible for five hours. That’s the maximum amount anyone can spend on one Super Chat and the maximum amount of time a Super Chat can be visible.

From there, a comment’s exposure time decreases as viewers donate less money ($100 = one hour; $200 = two hours; etc.). It’s almost as if your fans are placing bets on who can get your attention the fastest.

If friendly bidding wars aren’t your thing, that’s okay. Maybe instead you can appreciate how beautiful Super Chats look? They come in a rainbow of colors, so thankfully, no one’s going to miss them in the live chat. Depending on how much money a viewer sends, their Super Chat could be red, green, blue, or another vibrant color.

Which Channels Have Access to Super Chats?

Before you go looking for the Super Chat feature, take a moment to find out if your channel is eligible to collect them. To meet the requirements, every creator needs:

Even if you have those three things, Super Chats may not be available to you all the time. To troubleshoot, start by viewing your live stream settings. Make sure you’ve activated the live chat feature because right now, that’s the only way to view, send, and receive Super Chats.

Additionally, you won’t be able to earn Super Chats if you have a ‘made for kids’ channel or post age-restricted content.

Once you’ve determined your eligibility, the only thing left to do is active Super Chats! Here’s how to do that:

In the left navigation menu, click Monetization.

At the top of the ‘Channel Monetization’ dashboard, click ‘Supers’.

On the right side of the screen, you can disable or enable Super Chats or Super Stickers ( similar to Super Chats, but are animated graphics viewers can buy to display in streams/premieres).

When you want to see all of your Super Chats in one place, stay in this dashboard. Right below the ‘on’ and ‘off’ dial, you’ll find a list of all your recent donations and who sent them. As an example, here’s what our dashboard looks like for the vidIQ YouTube Channel:

While Super Chats can earn you money and engagement, there are a few fine-print rules to pay attention to, such as:

There’s a lot of news swirling around about TikTok right now. In the last few weeks, the Trump administration wanted to ban it, Microsoft wanted to buy it, and TikTok themselves launched a

On one side of the conversation, things seem bleak. Back in December 2019, cybersecurity company called Check Point published a

Even with all the scrutiny around TikTok, things are getting better. Instead of banning the app, the Trump administration is now giving ByteDance (TikTok’s parent company) some time to negotiate

Despite all this, TikTok's fate seems to change by the hour. Nothing feels concrete, so at the very least TikTokers should prepare for the worst - either losing their U.S. audience or the app altogether.

Dealing with YouTube’s Copyright Policy

Outside of that, there’s one challenge you’ll face on YouTube that isn’t as prominent on TikTok: If you like to lip-sync and dance to popular songs in your videos, that could violate YouTube’s copyright policy.

, YouTube states: “Creators should only upload videos that they have made or that they're authorized to use. That means they should not upload videos they didn't make, or use content in their videos that someone else owns the copyright to, such as music tracks, snippets of copyrighted programs, or videos made by other users, without necessary authorizations.”

If YouTube detects unauthorized music in your videos, you could accumulate copyright strikes. Collect three of these warnings, and your account could be terminated.

 is a live-streaming platform that caters mostly to gamers. With more than 15 million daily active users, it’s a popular place for streamers to play games of their choice.

If you’re a TikToker who loves online gaming, Twitch could become your new home. Creators on this platform are having tons of fun, and that’s something you’re already accustomed to in TikTok’s meme-heavy universe.

When you decide to join Twitch, don’t forget to bring your TikTok spark and cheer. You can do this in every broadcast by cracking jokes, being funny, and responding to chats. It also helps if you’re great at playing games, but please - don’t let this be your only selling point. A lot of people think streamers on Twitch need to be skilled players, when really, they need to be entertaining to attract followers (and get paid).

TikTok is hitting the headlines yet again, so what should creators on the platform do to protect their future?

TikTok Drama: What Now for Creators on the Platform?

If you've been an active consumer of YouTube video, How many comments do you think you’ve posted over a lifetime? Is it a whopping number like 7,000 or just a handful?

If your number is closer to, or exceeds 7,000, being able to review and delete your comments is important. We live in a fast-paced world, which means your opinions won’t always age well online. They can sound offensive, off-topic, or downright cringey when you re-read them several weeks later.

Luckily, there’s a simple way to take inventory of the comments you post. To view and delete your riskier discussions, let’s dive into a step-by-step tutorial.

How to View the Comments You’ve Posted on YouTube

Go to the YouTube homepage and find the left-hand navigation menu. Click ‘History’.

On the right side of this screen, you’ll see a panel called History Type. Select the ‘Comments’ option.

The next thing you’ll see is a collection of comments you’ve posted on YouTube. These will be in chronological order, starting with your most recent comments. If you see any cringey ones, hover over the comment to reveal three circles. Click that icon, and the option to either edit or delete the comment will appear.

Now that we’ve taken care of these comments, let’s review the ones in your live streams. To do this, return to the History Type panel and switch your selection from ‘Comments’ to ‘Live Chat’. Now you can cycle through any live stream chat messages you’ve posted.

Three Drawbacks of Using YouTube’s Comment Review Tool

On the surface, this tool for viewing past comments is very useful. In the most basic sense, it does what it promises and allows you to review and delete comments. But here’s the catch (and it’s a pretty big one): If you want to do any of this with ease or speed, you’re out of luck as this tool is slightly unfinished.

First of all, there are no filters or search parameters to narrow your results. All you can do is scroll the comments in chronological order until the page has to dynamically load, which takes forever.

Secondly, this YouTube tool doesn’t display all the comments you’ve posted. I know this because we at vidIQ reply to hundreds of comments every time we post new videos. It feels like this tool only collects the comments we post from a YouTube watch page and not all the comments we reply to within the YouTube Studio.

Lastly, the comments displayed by this tool don’t have channel icons or thumbnail images next to them. It’s a small thing to overlook, but their absence makes a huge difference in the user experience.

I say all that to say this: If your goal is to dig through years of YouTube comments to find your most embarrassing ones, the task won’t be easy or efficient.

Oddly enough, this presents a legitimate question: Why would I tell you about a tool that’s not very useful? Well, it’s better than nothing of course. But the other reason is that it opens the door to a powerful tool you shouldn’t ignore.

The Gateway to Managing Your Privacy on YouTube

YouTube’s comment review tool might be unfinished, but the Watch History tool in the same panel feels pretty complete. With this tool, you can review the videos you’ve watched and decide whether to erase that history. It’s a great way to manage your data and privacy on YouTube.

Furthermore, if you want to review and delete activity that Google tracks as a whole, this is where you can start to fix all of that (when you use Google services).

But having said that, indulge me here for a moment. Looking back at the comment review tool, can you imagine if it actually worked well? It would be useful for creators and viewers who 

Knowing this, let's hold YouTube accountable. If enough people speak up and express the need for better tools, maybe YouTube will listen and fix them.

If you post lots of comments on YouTube, you might want to review and delete those every now and then. Here’s how.

How to View Any Comment You've Ever Posted On YouTube

As you settle into your journey as a YouTube creator, a simple but curious question may cross your mind: Do any really popular YouTubers follow my channel?

There are plenty of reasons you might want to know something like this. Other than simply being curious, perhaps you want to know if your content is valuable to creators with a larger following. Or maybe, as a growing channel, you want to see if these accomplished YouTubers are direct competitors in your niche. Those are all valid reasons, and you should explore them if you want to 

Before we dive into a tutorial on how to do that via locating your most popular subscribers, watch this video for an overview on the topic:

How to View Your Largest Subscribers on YouTube

 From any YouTube desktop page, click your profile image at the top right-hand corner of the screen and go to the YouTube Studio.

 On this dashboard screen, you should find exactly what you're looking for via the Recent Subscribers panel. Click the ‘see all’ link to access the pop-up subscriber screen.

When the panel expands, you’ll see a pre-sorted list of the most subscribed-to channels who’ve subscribed to you in the last 90 days

However, those are not your most subscribed-to followers, so here’s the next step: Click the time period box and switch it from ‘90 days’ to ‘Lifetime’. And voila! These are your biggest YouTube fans - not necessarily your most important ones, but the ones with the most fans out of all your subscribers.

Notice how the list changes when you switch the period box from ‘90 days’ to ‘Lifetime’. We tried it for ourselves, and it made a big difference in the results. By making that simple distinction, our most popular subscriber of 3.53M (originally) was knocked to the bottom of the list, allowing a channel with 15.2M subscribers to appear at the top:

One thing to keep in mind is that you can subscribe back to any of these channels directly from this page. If you’d like to check out their content first, you can click a channel’s thumbnail icon to jump straight to their YouTube channel homepage. You can even increase the number of channels displayed per page and navigate through the full list, if you have the time.

Alternatively, if you want to see your oldest public subscriber, stay in this expanded panel. From the ‘Subscriber Count’ column, navigate to your immediate left and find the ‘Date Subscribed’ section. Click this column a few times to re-order the list from oldest to newest subscribers.
