Today, we’re going to address some of those questions. If you’ve been wondering what the YouTube Kids app is - or what happens on that side of the video world - here are six important things to know.

#1 What is YouTube Kids? And How do Kid-friendly videos Make it to the App?

YouTube Kids is a safer, age-appropriate version of the regular platform. It was created to give kids a simple but fun way to explore their interests online.

As a creator, you won’t need an invitation (or application) for your content to appear there. Instead, the videos are drawn from YouTube’s vast library. Automatic filters, human review, and user feedback help determine which videos are suitable for the Kids app.

#2 How Can I Ensure My Videos are Eligible for the YouTube Kids app?

According to YouTube, your content should be positive and educational to make the cut. That’s the general overview, but here are some 

Make age-appropriate videos for kids and their families.

Avoid controversial topics (like violence or sexual content).

Post original content that isn’t sensationalist or repetitive.

Make sure on-screen minors feel comfortable and safe.

Make sure that popular or trendy content is family-friendly.

#3 If I’ve Categorized My Channel as Made For Kids, Will My Videos Automatically Appear on the YouTube Kids App?

There isn’t a clear answer to this question yet. However, my guess would be no. Just from reading the list of guidelines above, it seems as if the Made For Kids label is just that - a label.

YouTube will use it to identify videos and channels that might be a good fit, but additional review will help the platform select the best content. That’s my prediction until YouTube shares more information!

#4 Can Videos on the YouTube Kids App Earn Adsense Revenue?

Yes! The app is free, so YouTube uses ad revenue to sustain the platform and pay kid-focused creators.

there’s a chance you could earn less money on the Kids platform

. That’s because the number of users on both apps is not even comparable: YouTube boasts 2 billion users per month, while the Kids app attracts several million users each week.

Naturally, advertisers will flock to the platform with the largest audience. If YouTube Kids attracts fewer advertisers, you might earn a fraction of what you’d make on plain old YouTube.

#5 Will Videos in the YouTube Kids App Show Targeted Ads?

No, you won’t be able to run targeted ads on the YouTube Kids app. This is a decision the company made to comply with the 

, which prevents online publishers from collecting personal information from users younger than 13.

YouTube Kids isn’t the only app to axe personalized ads. Right now, the same rule applies to the main app. And honestly, that’s another reason your revenue could decrease on both platforms. A lack of targeted ads results in fewer views, clicks, and Adsense revenue.

Right now, only in-stream video ads appear in the Kids app. That means you won’t see things like text ads, overlays, and banners on a watch page.

However, what you will see on the YouTube Kids app are ad disclaimers. These help children understand when a ‘commercial’ is about to play, and that it’s separate from video they’re watching.

To further protect young viewers, these ads aren’t clickable. Children can watch them, but they won’t find themselves being taken off the platform and onto third-party websites. Even info cards are disabled to keep kids on the platform.

"People Left Threatening Remarks Simply Because I Was Young"

“I started YouTube at the age of 13, and my first videos were very bad. However, I was good at SEO, and these videos racked up hundreds of thousands of views. People left hate comments and threatening remarks, simply because I was young and the quality of my videos was not very good. Fast-forward three years, and some of those same people continue to write hate comments. I have blocked and hidden such users, however, some have even gone to the extent to create new accounts just to annoy me.”

Fighting the Stigma of Mental Health Conditions

“I make video content related to schizophrenia and mental health. Over the years, most commenters support my work and celebrate my content. However, there is a slow, steady strain of commenters I must mute. Some of them are delusional people, some seem more violent or mal-intended, and some seek to confuse and torment people with lies and blame. Some are religious ‘fanatic’ types, claiming I need to ‘see it their way’ and it's a kind of cognitive harassment. They seem to do it on purpose to agitate and derail my intended conversations.”

“When I first started YouTube in 2018, this group of smalltime YouTubers in the same genre created a short series of them cyberbullying me and falsely reporting me on YouTube. This went on for about three months until YouTube deleted my account because of the spammed reports. About 4-5 months later, I restarted my current channel and started uploading videos with my friends for fun. Its been a while since I've seen the YouTubers who cyberbullied me for views, but from what I remember, they stopped uploading videos. Unfortunately, the ‘series’ is still up, but I've gotten past it.”

Overcoming Sexism, Political Differences, and More

“My niche is very male-dominated. I have literally made videos on topics male colleagues have made, I have been called names and bullied into oblivion despite always providing valid bibliography to everything I cite. I had to eventually hold all comments on my videos by default. The commenters went from insulting my looks to questioning my heritage and origin, all stuff that has nothing to do with my niche.



Recently the alt-right must have really not liked me speaking up and supporting Black Lives Matter because rape threats have started coming in too. All those comments get blocked at the entrance, but gosh, it takes a toll to see how vehemently complete strangers can just hate me.”

YouTubers Speak Out Against Online Harassment

As you probably know, creators in the vidIQ community aren’t the only victims of cyberbullying - it can happen to anyone on the web. For two creators specifically, things got so bad that they shared their harassment stories on YouTube to raise awareness.

We know harassment is an issue for many video creators, but what we don't know is the full extent of the psychological damage it’s causing.

Why Online Harassment May Be Even More Devastating Than We Thought

Online harassment is an unfortunate but well known problem in digital communities. According to a Pew Research 

, four in 10 Americans have personally experienced some form of unacceptable online behavior, from offensive name-calling to physical threats.

While no one can erase the chance of being harassed online, YouTube is doing everything it can to help creators thrive on its platform. In fact, last month, YouTube did three powerful things to promote online safety: It took a stand against harassment, resurfaced its community guidelines, and called attention to the safety tools available to creators.

Today, we’re following YouTube’s lead. To make sure you succeed as a creator, we’re sharing the platform’s online harassment solutions - specifically the safety tools. We’re going to cover what they are, how to use them, and where to find them when you truly need them.

But first, here's a quick video summarizing everything mentioned below:

The first thing you should know is that there are three ‘protection’ categories when it comes to harassment on YouTube. At the most basic levels, you can:

Of course, that’s the super-simplified overview. Dig a bit deeper, and you’ll find that these tools have multiple protection options. Whether you want a harmful video taken down or your comments disabled, you can fully customize your YouTube experience. Let’s take a look at some of the options below:

The most effective way to block harmful users is by tackling those nasty, hurtful comments in your spam folder. Here’s how:

1. Go to your channel’s homepage and click the profile icon in the top-right corner of the screen. From the drop-down menu, select ‘YouTube Studio’.

2. Go to the left-hand navigation bar and click ‘Comments’.

The next thing you’ll see is the ‘Channel Comments’ panel. In this section, select the ‘Likely Spam’ column to display this category of comments. These can often be your most inappropriate comments, so start here when you need to block certain users.

To do this, simply click the ban icon underneath the comment in question. This is known as the ‘hide user from channel’ tool, which prevents users from engaging with your content.

This tool doesn’t ban anyone from your channel officially, but it’s great for blocking unruly members of your audience. For example, if you post a video or live stream to YouTube, hidden users will still have the ability to watch your content. What they won’t be able to do, however, is leave comments on your videos.

Additionally, you can block someone who has already posted an offensive comment. To do that, keep the ‘Channel Comments’ panel open. Navigate to the ‘Published’ column and click the three circles underneath any comment. This will display the same ‘hide user from channel’ option as before.

Did you know you can automate the comment review process on YouTube? Instead of deleting harmful messages that are already public, you can set up filters to stop negative comments from publishing. Here’s how it works:

2. Go to the left-hand navigation bar and click ‘Settings’.

3. In the settings menu, click ‘Community.’

4. In the ‘Automated Filters’ column, scroll down to the ‘Blocked Words’ section.

In this box, type all the words you’d find offensive or don’t want to see in your comment section. These could be racial slurs, curse words, or lewd, sexual terms that shouldn’t be shared on a public forum. When you have all the words typed out, do a quick skim to make sure each one is separated by a comma, as YouTube requires.

And now, here’s the good news: When a user submits a comment using any of your blocked words, that comment will be held for review instead of publishing instantly.

To access these comments, return to the ‘Channel Comments’ panel mentioned above. Navigate to the ‘Held For Review’ column, and you’ll find a list of questionable comments that may be inappropriate for public display.

Overall, this word-filtering process is extremely helpful. Even still, it won’t stop every instance of harassment on your channel. When rude comments seem to fall through the cracks, take these extra steps to fight back:

These may seem like drastic measures, but don’t be afraid to use them. If someone is negatively impacting you as a creator, things will only worsen if you let it go unchecked.

How to Change Your Video’s Privacy Settings

When it comes to video visibility, there are levels of ‘reach’ that determine who gets to watch and share your content on YouTube. Luckily, you can tweak these settings to make your videos public, unlisted, or private.

, anyone can watch and share it across the web. On YouTube, the video will appear in search results and related video lists.

 videos won’t appear on your channel or in YouTube search results. These videos can only be viewed and shared by people who have a link to that content.

 videos can only be viewed by you (and anyone else you grant permission). Like unlisted videos, they won’t appear on your channel or in YouTube search results.

So, how do you restrict the access people have to your videos, especially when you’re being harassed online? Here’s the rundown:

2. Go to the left-hand navigation bar and click ‘Videos’.

3. Find the video you want to update, then head to the ‘Visibility’ column.

4. From the drop-down menu, select ‘Public’, ‘Unlisted’, or ‘Private’.

If you upload videos about controversial topics, this feature will be invaluable to you. Oftentimes, viewers’ opinions can straddle the line between criticism and outright harassment. When something like that happens, disabling the comment section might not be enough. If you’re being attacked across the web, consider changing a video’s privacy settings to restrict its reach.

How to Request a Video Removal on YouTube

If someone uploads a video of you and you didn't consent to it, the poster may have violated 

. This resource states that creators shouldn’t expose details about someone’s identity online, which can include a person’s:

If this happens to you, reach out to the uploader and ask them to take down the video. If for some reason they don’t agree to do it, you can request to have the video removed. YouTube has a

While THENX has a massive audience, its revenue streams can be repeated by small to midsize YouTubers.

For the first stream, Chris sells various workout merchandise, such as weighted vests, gym bags, and water bottles. For the second, he offers a workout membership plan to his viewers, billed at $9.99 monthly. When customers purchase this upgrade, they get access to a calisthenics workout library, exercise technique guides, and training programs.

Chris also has a THENX app filled with calisthenics workouts. It’s free to download and has several tutorials, but there’s an option to upgrade to the membership mentioned above. So altogether, Chris uses his YouTube channel to advertise three money-generating services. He shares these products in the description of his videos, as shown below:

One of the perks of running a fitness channel is that you’ll always have useful, evergreen videos to upload. Because getting in shape is a journey, health-conscious viewers could watch exercise content for years to come.

Heart Alchemy Yoga: Live Yoga Classes via Zoom

, a channel with 104K subscribers. As a yoga instructor, she uploads tutorials on almost every iteration of the practice, including Bikram (high heat), yin (slow-paced), vinyasa (flowing postures), and power yoga (vigorous).

When the coronavirus pandemic was officially declared, Michelle responded with more at-home yoga tutorials to help viewers stay safe at home. In the video below, titled “Power Yoga Workout: 30-Min at Home Cardio Flow,” she demonstrates a series of yoga poses:

Amazingly, Heart Alchemy Yoga is a volunteer organization that runs on donations. Therefore, Michelle relies on monetary contributions from viewers and in-person clients alike.

In addition to that, Michelle hosts live yoga classes via Zoom. In the screenshot below, you can see that she encourages viewers to email her about sign-up details. It’s not clear whether she accepts payment for those lessons, but for your business, you absolutely can.

Live-streamed workouts aren’t new, but they’ve gotten more popular due to COVID-19 and recent state lockdowns. For example, fitness studios that temporarily shuttered in March shifted from in-person training to

Cycling with Gabriella Guevara: Subscribe and Ride for $1

 is a rhythm cycling instructor. On her YouTube Channel of 38.1K subscribers, she uploads spin workouts set to upbeat music, such as pop, hip-hop, and EDM.

For many of her workouts, Gabriella shows up with her stationary bike, neon lights, headset mic, and a playlist of awesome music. Each workout is high-energy, and you can witness that in the 45-minute 'Quarantine Ride' video below. During the workout, Gabriella motivates viewers to push through their fatigue and keep spinning:

Gabriella monetizes such workouts in three powerful ways: merchandise, nutrition coaching, and a subscription service. She includes a link to her website in the description of her videos, which allows viewers to purchase these services.

Of all her offerings, Gabriella’s subscription plan is the most interesting in terms of revenue. For a trial price of just $1, customers can sign up to access all of Gabriella’s spin classes. That amounts to more than 65 rides, and if customers decide to stick around, she receives the post-trial fee of 14.99 per month.

But that’s not all. Her website has a merchandise section, which contains cycling-themed T-shirts of $22 or more. There’s also a section for custom nutrition coaching, and those packages are between $65 and $80.

In total, Gabriella has at least four ways to make money from each video: AdSense revenue, subscriptions, merchandise, and coaching.

However, all of these amazing tutorials were pre-recorded until three months ago. That’s when Jane started going live on YouTube, adding in-the-moment painting tutorials to her video collection. The videos, which range in style from watercolor to acrylic, are compiled in a convenient playlist called “

.” In one such video from that playlist (below), Jane shows more than 29,000 viewers how to paint a forest filled with birch trees, in spring:

Due to the current pandemic, Jane streamed this tutorial at home, away from her studio. Nevertheless, she’s still finding creative ways to make money from her YouTube content. In addition to AdSense revenue, Jane has four more income streams attached to the tutorial above: affiliate links, a video sponsor, a Patreon subscription link, and a link to buy her custom paint brushes. In just one video, that amounts to five money-making opportunities.

All this magic takes place in the description section of Jane’s live-streamed videos. In that area, she shares a link to her website, which is where all of her affiliate links are housed. When customers use those links to purchase art supplies, Jane earns a commission.

Her Patreon is also listed to encourage a more consistent steam of income. When viewers navigate there, they’ll find monthly subscription plans that house exclusive content from Jane: bonus videos, more live paintings, Q&As, viewing parties, and more.

Her last two income streams (brand partnership and product line) may take a while for new creators to achieve. After all, Jane has been on YouTube since 2014 and currently has 261K subscribers. However, it’s a goal worth shooting for, and Jane is proving that fine artists can make money on YouTube too.

Jennifer McGuire Ink: Greeting Card Courses

 is a respected crafting channel that currently has 385K subscribers. Jennifer, who is a stamping enthusiast and crafting instructor, uploads videos about how to make handmade greeting cards.

Jennifer has monetized her channel, so she does earn AdSense revenue from her videos. That certainly helps to expand her income, as she shares tons of free tips and tricks about card making each week. But what if you, as a crafting creator, wanted to make even more money? How do you do that when you’re giving away a large chunk of your expertise for free, or are only collecting Adsense revenue?

In Jennifer’s case, the answer was to post general hacks on YouTube and save specific (paid) advice for another platform. For example, in the video below, Jennifer shares general 

time-saving hacks for two cardmaking processes: die-cutting and stamping

That video is a general overview of quick tips. However, on Jennifer’s website, she sells courses that cover specific topics in cardmaking, as opposed to her generic instruction on YouTube.

There are courses on color theory for card designers, how to make watercolor designs, and the art of crafting holiday cards. Viewers can access these courses through a website link in the description of her videos, so it’s a great example of how YouTube promotion can fund outside ventures. In that same section, Jennifer even shares affiliate links to purchase the tools and materials used in her videos.

Crafting doesn’t have to be an unpaid hobby. If you’re great with your hands and have an eye for design, teach others what you know on YouTube.
